What a bizarre yet strangely endearing pilot. I must say that the premise of a female Vice President in over her head is an inspired one for a comedy, and the casting of Julia Louis Dreyfus almost immediately ensured my tuning in. After all, she’s a true talent and one of the strongest comedic actresses around. I don’t think I need to convince anyone of Seinfeld’s brilliance and Julia’s outstandingly iconic performance as Elaine Bennis.
Much like in Seinfeld, she’s carved an awesome little character here and subsequently salvaged the show when the comedy wasn’t at its strongest. She plays the awkward role well and really makes you root for Selena no matter how idiotic she might be. I’m not too sure about the rest of the cast so far but there’s potential. In fact, Veep as a whole is a show filled with promise so I really hope they manage to tap into it. If they manage to do that, this could be one comedy that sticks around for a long time to come. Not bad at all.
