Color me impressed. Even after its promising pilot, I was sure that Continuum would turn into yet another cheap sci-fi show without much to offer. Interestingly enough, the show’s second outing was a solid hour that displayed a surprising amount of heart.
The episode’s final montage was particularly touching as it perfectly conveyed Keira’s drive and need to return home to her family. That emotion infuses the series with a very tangible goal to work towards and I find myself especially intrigued to see where it all goes.
I’d also like to point out the fantastic parallels between the flashback opening of Keira’s first day on the job as a “protector”, mirroring the episode’s final scene with her first day as a normal cop. It was just beautifully done as the contrasts in both herself and her environment were a joy to behold.
Finally, I do appreciate the show’s desire to add dashes of comedy to the proceedings (Keira trying to find and unsuccessfully operate an escape vehicle) as this is a series that really shouldn’t take itself too seriously.
All in all, much like the pilot I found myself pleasantly surprised. Let’s see if they can keep this up.
