Grey’s Anatomy 9×03 – Love The One You’re With

"Well you have been working with pigs, maybe she's afraid you'll slaughter someone out of habit."

Well that was a change of pace after the trauma that was Grey’s Anatomy‘s last outing. Sure this hour had its depressing moments but it was practically lightweight compared to last week’s massacre.

The airline settlement was an excellent little storyline for our characters and I look forward to seeing the investigation (and its effects) ripple throughout the season. The debate over whether our favorite docs should settle or not raised a very interesting moral dilemma as I found myself questioning whether I would take the money or not. Suffice to say, I still don’t know what I would have done so props to a very intriguing quandary. In addition, it gave Derek quite a bit to do as I was fascinated by his predictably righteous need to discover the true cause of the accident no matter what.

Another highlight of the hour was undoubtedly Callie and Arizona’s predicament. It’s quite hard to sit through and painfully realistic. We’re so used to Arizona being this bright, bubbly ray of sunshine that I’m finding it increasingly difficult to seeing her likes this. The shower scene at the end was especially disturbing and it was played to perfection by Sara and Jessica.

However, I could really care less about April and Avery as their atrocious mess of a storyline really dragged this hour down. April in particular is such a disposable character and I can not fathom how Shonda even allowed herself to write off Lexie, Sloane and Teddy when a charisma-vacuum such as April sucks up precious screen-time. Unacceptable.

Bits & Scalpels

– Bailey’s adventures in the attending room were hilarious. I love it when Chandra Wilson gets to do comedy.

– Is it wrong that I’m dying to know how much the settlement amount is?

– The new intern is kind of annoying, but I was amused watching her “flirt” with Callie.

– I enjoyed watching Yang and Owen reconnect on the phone. It’s been a while since they had a quiet moment.

– Mer and Avery bonding over the chief banging their moms was comedic genius.

– I still don’t like Alex. Shonda really should have written him and April off the show.

– The fat couple were a charming little duo, albeit a tad forgettable.

– Christina bonding with the ancient doc (his name still eludes me) was surprisingly heartwarming. So I guess her return to Seattle Grace is gonna take a while?

– The shower scene is seriously going to haunt me for a while.

– The final settlement scene was superb, particularly Callie’s breakdown.

Conclusion
All in all, a solid offering from an especially bleak season.

  1. so i've become addicted to reading your reviews right after i watch an episode.. id been waiting for this one :)) i just have one tiny comment.. I LOVE ALEX KAREV.

  2. Well hello what a pleasant surprise. Do keep up this regular commenting! And with all due respect, Alex should have died died DIED on that plane 😉

  3. My “Bits & Scalpels”:

    – The settlement storyline was indeed very interesting and posed a huge moral dilemma and honestly I am not sure what I would do in such situation either. The moving speech by Derek at the end and Callie’s breakdown were perfect

    – Bailey & Webber’s moment was very heartfelt but then again I think any scene with these two will never be disappointing

    – I LOVE Alex Karev but I am so over the whole new intern thingie… I liked him better with Arizona around

    – I am glad Hunt and Christina are talking again and I especially liked the part where she told Meredith that “All she has to do is hear his voice and she’s not gonna be able to think straight” when talking about Kepner & Avery while she was really thinking about Owen & herself

    – Who still wants Kepner around? Anyone? I mean really!! I understand that there is the whole new storyline with Avery but c’mon he really needs someone less annoying (I hated Kepner from the moment she got Derek shot and I am still not over it yet!!)

    – Yes, I cried during Callie & Arizona’s shower scene. Kudos for both actresses for a flawless performance

P.S. I was introduced to your blog by a friend and I have been reading your reviews ever since. Keep up the good work 🙂

P.P.S. The ancient doctor will always be Mr. Feeny (from Boy Meets World), and him bonding with Christina was indeed heartwarming

  4. Hi Tagouga! I'm really glad you're enjoying the blog! Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts!

Ah yes I heard that Mr. Feeny is apparently a popular character. I never watched Boy Meets World but his dynamic with Christina is pretty heartwarming and great!

And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who detests April! What a useless waste of space!

  5. MISTEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!

    Love that show!
