Movie Review: We’re The Millers

"I'm not buying you alright, I'm renting you! Like Pretty Woman."

The biggest compliment I can give We’re The Millers is this: it’s been a long time since I had this much fun at the movies.

The premise is simple: A pot dealer rounds up a fake family in order to smuggle drugs across the Mexican border without arousing suspicion. It’s the kind of premise that’s ripe with comic potential, and the script makes sure the colorful cast gets to play off each other to maximum, hilarious effect.

Jennifer Aniston has gotten a lot of flack in recent years. Maybe it’s overexposure (Brangelina anyone?), or maybe she just chose way too many flops – but a lot of people seem to forget that she was downright brilliant on Friends. In fact, she was my favorite – consistently delivering nuanced performances as the lovable Rachel Greene. In We’re The Millers, Aniston is a particular highlight as she banters with Jason Sudeikis and his zany charm. It’s worth nothing that the actress is now 44 – a fact you’re be hard pressed to believe when she unveils a jawdropping figure that’s quite fitting of her role as a stripper with the heart of gold (is there any other kind?).

The most impressive weapon in the film’s arsenal is its cast: Not only are Sudeikis and Aniston pretty great, but the film’s younger stars (Emma Roberts and Will Poulter) also do a terrific job bringing their characters to life. The four play off each other beautifully, and while the film doesn’t break any new ground, it’s never boring. Also hysterical are a whacky and twisted couple played by Kathryn Hahn and Nick Offerman. The two are an utter hoot, and they supply the film with some of its most memorable moments. Simply put: Millers is perfectly cast across the board.

While the film is a somewhat predictable affair, its final sequence is quite brilliant, with a resolution that I surprisingly didn’t see coming. I actually find myself hoping for a sequel (a rare feat), simply because I want to spend more time with these people. Impressive indeed.

Conclusion
It’s raunchy, amusing, and thoroughly charming. If you’re looking for a light diversion on a Saturday night, We’re The Millers comes highly recommended for a laugh or two.
