Poster Reviews Volume #2

Supergirl – Season Two
Talk about dull. Not only is Melissa Benoist photoshopped beyond her life (which is totally unnecessary as she’s freakin’ beautiful), but her fist looks very odd (bizarrely enough, just like in this season one poster). In addition, the CW not only hijacked the tagline, they’ve already released another poster which is almost as bad. At least this crossover creation tried to be different with its funky comicbook font!
Tagline: The CW has a new hero.

Stranger Things – Season One
Whereas the first poster brought together a number of different elements (and it did so beautifully), this teaser visual is more atmospheric with one single focus. The haunting visual of a fallen bike with our three protagonists stumbling on to it is wonderfully intriguing, and does a superb job of capturing your attention. There’s no line, and the visual doesn’t even need it.
Tagline: None.

Bull – Season One
I’m torn over Bull‘s marketing campaign. The first image had a killer line but a lazy visual; this one has a better visual but a useless message. Nevertheless, at least it kinda tells you that this show will have a lot of scenes set in court. Third time’s the charm perhaps?
Tagline: Outthink the system.

Kevin Can Wait – Season One
Meh. Everything about this is below-average: the colors are dull, the visual doesn’t say much about what the show is about, and Kevin James’ face looks horrendously photoshopped. I get that they have a national treasure in James (King of Queens was a huge hit after all), but you’re going to have to do better than this CBS.
Tagline: Hello again, America.

The Middle – Season Eight
I don’t even watch The Middle, but I genuinely love this poster. Wisely, it doesn’t tack on an unnecessary line as the visual is hilarious enough on its own. When you’ve got a sitcom in your eighth season, you don’t really need more. Simple, funny, and effective.

Modern Family – Season Eight
I’ve always liked Modern Family‘s marketing. This one was witty, this one was elegant, and this one was awesome. But this latest poster? Lazy. The line is generic, and the visual is nothing new. They should have tried something different like this.
Tagline: A work of art.

Empire – Season Three
Much better than the boring first attempt. The graffiti adds a dynamic touch to the poster, and frames the show’s two leads as imposing and intimidating. I particularly love the crowns and “King Lucious” /”Queen Cookie” scribbled over their pictures
Tagline: Prepare for Reign / Royalty keeps it real.

Empire – Season Three
One word: Yuck! This one’s down to personal preference, but the color explosion is way too much for me to handle. One nice touch: lots of quotes and easter eggs in the graffiti. Props for that, but not for recycling the tagline.
Tagline: Their reign, their rules.

Narcos – Season Two
Now here’s a piece of art! The art direction here is superb, with our protagonist (antihero?) made up of bullets. Even better is the single bullet flying towards its destination, creating a clever parallel with the tagline and the ongoing hunt for Escobar. Incredible!
Tagline: The hunt for Pablo is on.

Narcos – Season Two
Although it’s eerily similar to this True Blood poster, this poster most definitely works. It’s wonderfully simple, morbidly compelling, and straight to the point. I didn’t love season one of Narcos, but now I can’t wait to catch the sophomore year. I also love the fact that the tagline is simply Pablo’s name with the year of his birth (and death). Exceptional!
Tagline: Pablo Escobar 1949 – 1993.

Narcos – Season Two
And the awesomeness continues with yet another gorgeous visual. This fantastic campaign reminds of True Blood‘s awesome visuals (every single one was tremendous). Everything about this is stunningly realized; my favorite poster in quite a while!
Tagline: Pablo Escobar 1949 – 1993.

American Horror Story – Season 6
I loved the first teaser poster for this season, and this one is equally outstanding. Not only is the image quite creepy, but the smoke elegantly weaves together two ideas: the number 6 (since this is the show’s sixth season) and a question mark (since the whole marketing campaign has encouraged viewers to guess what the season’s theme will be about). Brilliant!

American Horror Story – Season 6
This one doesn’t cut it for me. I like the idea in theory, but the execution is lacking. I just don’t know what I’m supposed to think besides the obvious unsettling tone. Is the monster choking her? Is she possessed? Am I even in the right ballpark? This one definitely needed a tagline to clarify things.
Tagline: None.

American Horror Story – Season 6
Again, the two elements (the 6 and the question mark) are utilized to create an effective sense of mystery. The blood drenched hooks make for a sinister visual in its own right. However, something’s missing and that’s probably the tagline which would have elevated it further.
Tagline: None.

American Horror Story – Season 6
Gross but amazing. The use of the color red in the text is a bit jarring, but the mummified woman is suitably unsettling. It’s an eerie success in my book.

Son of Zorn – Season One
Ignoring the fact that this character is a huge He-Man rip-off, I love the concept of this upcoming comedy. The line is terrific, and the visual is certainly eye catching with the mix of cartoon and live action. Sure the photoshop is pretty weak on those faces, but I can’t wait to see more!
Tagline: Some families are just more animated than others.

Son of Zorn – Season One
Even better! The double meaning in the tagline is hilarious, and the visual is just eye-poppingly good. Well done FOX, keep it up!
Tagline: Not everyone’s suited for the real world.
