What a strange but fascinating pilot.
This brand new thriller by Starz (which has wisely ordered two 10 episode seasons of the show) is the story of a bored government employee who stumbles on to a parallel world. I’m not going to reveal anything more because this is the kind of show that’s most effective when you go in completely blind. Suffice to say, the show’s premise has limitless possibilities, and I for one can not wait to see where it goes next.
Playing two roles that couldn’t be more different from one another, J.K. Simmons is absolutely incredible as our protagonist. You never wonder which Howard you’re watching, and that’s due to the minute details that Simmons plants into his performance. His body language, his gaze, his vocal delivery – they completely change when he switches between the dual Howards, and it’s outstanding to watch unfold. This is certainly the kind of role that should win him every award in sight in the next award cycle.
The show’s premise about parallels worlds isn’t just high-concept filler either; Counterpart tackles the existential element of it all and the power of the choices we make (or rather… don’t make). This is a show that really makes you think, while still injecting a healthy dose of adrenaline and action. I love it when a show comes out of nowhere and is this darn good.
Conclusion
Impeccably made and exquisitely acted, The Crossing is a powerful debut episode from Counterpart. Highly recommended.

Seirously, if J.K. Simmons doesn’t win every award out there for just his performance in this pilot alone, then I will be pissed. I was so impressed seeing both Howards in the same frame, the editing looked absolutely flawless. And you’re right, it’s NEVER confusing as to which Howard we see on screen. Just one look on his face tells you exactly which character you’re looking at, and that’s the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen!
Already calling it one of my favorite shows hahaha. And the ending!! SO PERFECT.
