Quite often, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves, but Ant-Man (extremely well-played by Paul Rudd) has been on my superhero radar ever since his first movie hit theaters back in 2015.
Fast forward a year later and we saw him again in Civil War, alongside Captain America and a few other Avengers. Now he’s finally back for yet another solo adventure, and it seems that Marvel isn’t running out of fresh ideas anytime soon. While Avengers: Infinity War was somehow “dark”, Ant-Man and The Wasp feels like the complete opposite: a light and constantly funny adventure that truly fits the summer formula.
This is a thoroughly entertaining sequel that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it gives us the opportunity to get to know this underrated hero even more. This is also the movie where he gets a full-time help from “The Wasp” (Evangeline Lilli) and her father Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), as they face all sorts of challenging tasks.
As for the visual effects, I can only say “prepare to be dazzled”. A lot of critics throw around the expression “completely immersive” far too often, but thanks to a team of creative wizards, at least I can say that Ant-Man delivers the goods. We are right there with our tiny superhero at every turn, and with today’s cutting-edge technology, it looks beautiful, especially if you’re experiencing it in IMAX. And more importantly, these eye-popping visuals are in service of the story and never feel gimmicky.
Conclusion
Ant-Man and The Wasp is smart and constantly appealing; a solid addition to the Marvel cinematic universe. Now bring on Avengers 4!
