Pilot Reviews The Umbrella Academy TV Review

The Umbrella Academy – Series Premiere (We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals)

"I can't just call Dad in the afterlife and be like, "Dad, could you just stop playing tennis with Hitler for a moment and take a quick call?"

What a captivating pilot!

I knew nothing about The Umbrella Academy before watching this pilot, but I found myself pleasantly surprised by the premiere’s confidence, wit, and style.

The story of dysfunctional family of superheroes, Umbrella manages to make each of the siblings at the center of the story feel like fully-realized characters. Of course it helps that the casting is top-notch, but the pilot’s script is intriguing right off the bat. It reveals just enough about the show’s mythology, while leaving a lot of questions gloriously unanswered. It’s also got one heck of a hilarious cliffhanger.

This is also one extremely stylish show. Every frame is packed with eye popping visuals and details – it’s a true comicbook brought to life. The action sequences are slick, the CGI is on-point, and the set design is plain magnificent. Netflix is definitely firing on all cylinders with this one and I’m eager to see more.

Conclusion

Splashy visuals and a mesmerizing premise make for a wonderful series premiere.
