Captain Marvel – Movie Review

"I’m kind of done with you telling me what I can’t do."

Captain Marvel is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first blockbuster headlined by a female superhero. A lot was said about DC beating Marvel to the punch with Wonder Woman back in 2017, but truth be told, Captain Marvel is just as impressive (if not more-so in some ways).

Set in the 90s, the film offers a unique spin on the typical origin story; Carol Danvers’ journey is told in nonlinear fashion through multiple disjointed flashbacks. Thankfully, the script is wisely peppered with amusing one-liners and memorable action sequences to keep things moving through the confusion. Also refreshing? There’s no love interest in the film. In fact, Carol Danvers’ most important relationship is the one she shares with her lovable best friend Maria (delightfully portrayed by Lashana Lynch).

I had some hesitations about Brie Larson going into the film as I didn’t feel like the marketing conveyed her versatility. However, she makes for a terrific lead – Carol’s wisecracks are Buffy-esque, and her powers are arguably more impressive than the Man of Steel himself. In fact, the best thing about Captain Marvel is how insanely powerful its heroine is. There’s a reason Miss Danvers will be coming to the rescue in Avengers: Endgame, and her incredible powers are on full display here. It’s a true sight to behold, and the CGI is predictably top-notch.

Other standouts? Annette Bening delivers a layered and highly memorable supporting turn, and a hilarious cat called Goose steals every one of his scenes (he’s got some electric chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson). No spoilers here but this delightful feline is an absolute hoot in every way.

Conclusion

Marvel’s first solo superheroine gets a thrilling introduction with some kickass action and an empowering origin story.

  1. Thought it was okay. The cast was good but I think Brie gave better performances in her indie films and there were cringeworthy moments.
