Long Shot – Movie Review

"I've never been so scared in my entire life. And I was in an elevator with Saddam Hussein."

I didn’t think I would enjoy this one as much as I did!

Long Shot offers a refreshing twist on the romantic comedy genre. Charlize Theron’s character, Presidential hopeful Charlotte Field, is the one in control while Seth Rogen’s Fred Flarsky vies for her attention. That’s a welcome change of pace as we’re so used to a male protagonist assuming the alpha-dog role. Pair that gender-bending sentiment with some political elements, and you’ve got yourself a whole lot of creativity in a genre that is populated by carbon-copies.

Cast-wise, Theron and Rogen are both fantastic. They’re an oddball couple, but they work well together and you certainly find yourself rooting for them as the narrative carries on. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen Theron in a comedy (I’m used to seeing her kick ass in Atomic Blonde and Mad Max), but she knocks it out of the park. She’s so charming and magnetic here that I kind of want a weekly series with her as President. Wouldn’t that be just fantastic?

Conclusion

A light and charming romantic comedy with enough imagination to make it a worthwhile watch.
