Sometimes you just need a good comedy.
The Hustle is not art by any means, but it’s a delightfully amusing comedy with two terrific performances by Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson playing a pair of cunning con-women. The script has its weak moments, but both actresses manages to keep the narrative afloat thanks to their astounding chemistry. Yes, I’d genuinely watch a trilogy featuring these two trying to con billionaires on the French Riviera, because you can tell they’re having a ball (particularly Hathaway and that immensely-distracting accent).
The film also has an exotic sense of place which is a nice change from the usual settings (because really who need another comedy set in Manhattan?). It’s set in the fictional town of Beaumont-Sur-Mer, and the whacky hijinks are endless. Yes there’s a lot of slapstick but Hathaway and Wilson are both so adept at the physical comedy that it’s all lighthearted and worthwhile.
Conclusion
A charming vibe and excellent chemistry make for an amusing diversion. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it’s worth a few laughs.
